Combination Feeding

Many parents choose to opt for combination feeding their baby. While breast is certainly optimal it is not always the best nor only option for every family. As a lactation consultant I believe that there is no "right" way to feed your baby only the way that best suits your family.

If you are thinking about combination feeding.

Here are a few things to consider. Milk is made on a supply and demand system in order to not have your supply impacted. Understanding this rule is paramount. If you are indeed worried about supply or are combination feeding because you are worried your baby isn't getting enough. Please see my previous post on this topic and link in with your local IBCLC.

Pick one (or more) time to offer your baby a bottle and try your best to stick to it. This means your body can respond appropriately reducing your supply around this time and to produce milk only where baby feeds from the breast and it is required.

Remember breastfeeding is more than just nutrition. Don't forget snuggles, skin to skin, sing to your baby or talk to them, lots of eye contact. Make bottle time bonding time. Use a Paced bottle feeding technique to ensure your baby does not develop a flow preference. Check out my Instagram highlights fora demonstration on this topic.

Did you combination feed your baby, how was your experience?
